Winter Is Coming to Utah: Hurricane Rachel & Home Tips
Winter Is Coming to Utah! Hurricane Rachel Brings Rain, Mountain Snow, and a Reminder to Get Your Home Ready
If you've stepped outside in Utah over the past few days, you've probably noticed that fall has taken a pretty dramatic turn!
We've gone from enjoying beautiful autumn weather to watching rainstorms roll through our valleys and fresh snow blanket the mountains. And believe it or not, we can thank a former hurricane for part of it!
That's right. Hurricane Rachel helped bring winter weather to Utah!
And while some of us are already dreaming about ski season, this week's weather is also a great reminder that winter homeownership comes with a little preparation.
Let's talk about what happened, why this weather matters, and a few simple things you can do to get your home ready for the colder months ahead.
From a Hurricane to Utah's First Taste of Winter
Hurricane Rachel developed over the Pacific Ocean before weakening into a tropical storm. As its remnants moved toward the western United States, they brought significant moisture into Utah.
At the same time, a colder storm system moved into the region from the Pacific Northwest.
The result? Heavy rainfall across portions of Utah, cooler temperatures, flooding concerns, and some exciting early-season snowfall in the mountains.
According to local weather reporting, Utah's Cottonwood Canyons were among the areas that benefited most from the snow. Snowbird recorded around 10 inches on its snow stake Tuesday, October 13, while other mountain areas experienced varying amounts.
It's an exciting sight for anyone who loves Utah's winters!
I even shared a few Instagram stories showing people already making turns through fresh powder in the mountains. Seeing people that excited about snow in October is one of those things that makes living in Utah so much fun.
Of course, early snowfall doesn't mean every ski resort is officially open, and conditions can change quickly. Always check current mountain conditions before heading out.
Why This Moisture Matters for Utah
While several days of rain might put a damper on our outdoor plans, moisture is incredibly important to Utah.
Our state depends heavily on mountain snowpack for its water supply. The rain we're receiving now can also help replenish soil moisture heading into winter.
Healthy soil moisture can help improve how efficiently melting snow reaches streams and reservoirs in the spring.
However, heavy rainfall can also create problems.
This week's storms brought flooding concerns, especially around waterways, canyons, and areas with poor drainage.
It's a good reminder that water is something Utah needs, but too much at once can still cause serious damage.
Five Things Utah Homeowners Should Do Before Winter
As much as we love watching the mountains turn white, it's also time to think about our homes.
Here are five simple things I recommend checking before winter really settles in.
1. Clean Your Gutters and Downspouts
Autumn leaves, dirt, and debris can quickly clog gutters.
When heavy rain or melting snow can't drain properly, water can overflow and collect near your home's foundation.
Take a few minutes to inspect your gutters and make sure downspouts direct water away from the house.
2. Disconnect Your Garden Hoses
This is one of those little things that's easy to forget!
Before freezing temperatures arrive, disconnect your garden hoses, drain them, and prepare exterior faucets according to their design.
Water trapped in vulnerable plumbing can freeze, expand, and potentially cause expensive damage.
3. Check Your Furnace and Replace Your Air Filter
Nobody wants to discover that their furnace isn't working on the first really cold night of the year.
Now is a great time to replace your furnace filter, test your heating system, and schedule professional maintenance if needed.
A little preparation today can save you from an uncomfortable surprise later.
4. Inspect Windows, Doors, and Weatherstripping
If you've noticed cold drafts around your windows or doors, your home might be losing heated air.
Inspect weatherstripping, door sweeps, and accessible caulking for signs of wear.
Sealing unnecessary air leaks can make your home more comfortable and may help reduce heating costs.
5. Check Your Roof and Drainage
After a stretch of heavy rainfall like we've experienced, it's worth looking around your property.
Do you notice standing water near your foundation? Any new ceiling stains? Damaged shingles or overflowing gutters?
Catching these warning signs early can help prevent more serious problems when winter storms arrive.
If something looks concerning, have a qualified professional inspect it rather than climbing onto a wet or icy roof yourself.
Winter Is Also a Great Time to Think About Your Next Move
Here's something that might surprise you: just because temperatures are dropping doesn't mean the real estate market shuts down!
People still buy and sell homes throughout the winter.
For buyers, the colder months can sometimes mean fewer competing buyers, depending on the neighborhood and current inventory.
For sellers, buyers who are actively shopping during the winter may have a strong reason to move.
There are trade-offs, of course. Winter can bring fewer listings, challenging showing conditions, and additional maintenance considerations.
The important thing is understanding your options rather than assuming you have to wait until spring.
At HŌM, we believe buying or selling a home should happen on your timeline, not simply because of the season.
